San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – California, USA

San Francisco as such is well presented elsewhere on the web, I do not think I have much to contribute there. But I will say that for a US city San Francisco is unusually compact and pretty. I can only recommend it warmly. The below walk is just one I did while attending WWDC down in San José.

Selected walks: For some information about possible hikes around San Francisco see “California & Nevada Travel Survival Kit” by Lonely Planet, referred to below as “/LP/” (now out of print…). A current walking guide is Frommer’s 24 Great Walks in San Francisco (picture above). I have not used that one myself so I do not know anything about it.

•1 4TH & TOWNSEND – FISHERMANS WHARF – GOLDEN GATE (+ return) (my total time around 6h): A huge eight hour walk done in six hours. The plan was to do “An Energetic Marin Roundtrip” from /LP/, however past the Golden Gate the continuing bicycle path was seemingly “No Pedestrians” (???) so I returned the same way. On Sundays the bridge was closed for bicycles, so I guess it would have been safe to continue, but… The idea is that you can take a ferry back from Sausalito.

UPDATE: I did this walk last in 1999, as of 2024 (as seen on Google Streetview) the sign at the Golden Gate even says “DO NOT ENTER” and the former bicycle path seems completely closed off at the other end. There are however now stairs going down under the bridge so you can cross to the western side to the Headlands Parking. From there you can pick up a road going back under the bridge and continue.

• Good starting points: • I started at the CalTrain station

• How to get there: • By air and/or train/bus

• More info: Sorry, none yet
