Mölle

MÖLLE – Sweden

Since I was 6 or 7 years old I have wanted to visit the place where the classic Swedish TV series “Kullamannen” takes place and where also 99% or so of it was actually was filmed. It looks like it might happen after all… Kullaberg is also a wonderful place for idyllic forest walks. Add to this a first class vineyard, and the picture is irresistible. You can watch the entire series on YouTube (your country permitting):

Selected walks: There are signposted walks and local maps accessible from everywhere. I have also made an Ingress mission to cover many important locations from the TV series. See walk 1 below.

•1 INGRESS “Kullamannen” MEGA-HIKE (5:56; 28889 steps; 23.1km; alt. gain 924m; alt. loss 909m): So you thought Skåne was flat? Well, here the words “Kulla” and “Berg” gives a hint that this is a different experience. This very long and at least for the first parts rather rough walk puts your endurance to the test. But it has to be done if you want to do the Ingress Mission in just one outing. My time includes a small rest at the lighthouse as well as a longer rest with refreshments at the café at Himmelstorp:

You start out from Mölle using the costal path to Ransvik. This is an essential route because only then will you pass yet another location probably used in the TV series called Solviken:

I have not included this as a Portal in my official Ingress Mission as there is some doubt if the scenes are actually from Solviken or if they are from Ransvik. I have also timed the coastal walk to Ransvik separately as walk 2 below. From Ransvik a still fairly rough path will take you to the lighthouse, the first official Ingress Portal on this walk. There is actually a small café at the lighthouse were you can even enjoy local wine (from “Arilds Vingård”, a very nice white wine). But better left for another day…

From the lighthouse follow the marked path towards “Himmelstorp”. As you will later discover there are several routes, take care on this very long walk to pick the shortest route, otherwise another kilometer or two of rough walking will have to be added to the walk as I did it.

From Himmelstorp it is getting easier. After a few minutes on the marked footpath towards Arild you pass the entrance towards a house rented by “Dr. Miller” in the 1967 TV Series:

Later, some treefall forces you to do a little bit of scrambling. In Arild you visit Strand Hotel, unfortunately the restaurant here is only open in the evening, otherwise a good lunch would have been required at this point…

Close to Arild, towards Skäret, you could visit Falkamöllan, another location from the TV Series (now private property and NOT an Ingress Portal). This is however a significant detour and is better left for another day. See walk 7 below. Walking the street out of Arild you pass by a former Petrol Station that was also used in the TV Series (private property and NOT an Ingress Portal):

Walking in the direction of Brunnby you should take the bicycle route through the previously mentioned Arilds Vingård. Otherwise you will need to walk a highly trafficked main road. This small side road will deposit you just meters from the church in Brunnby, and just some meters further you will also find the significant entrance to the graveyard. Then walk back to the major crossroads you passed and go left. Another left in a minute will take to “Krapperups Kyrkoväg”, another side road that will take you all the way to the Krapperup castle where the offical walk ends. You can visit the café here, visit the park and/or the museum, you can even walk from the lower side of the park back to Mölle (the reverse of walk 5 below) if you still have not had enough… My suggestion is to leave that for another day. The excellent Skåne bus system will take you back to Mölle (and promising a late but then wonderful lunch) in about 5 minutes!

•2 MÖLLE – RANSVIK (0:31; 2796 steps; 2.2km; alt. gain 28m; alt. loss 27m): This coastal route timed here is a short but rough walk even including the use of ropes. However it is the most efficient way of getting yourself to the excellent Ransvik Havsveranda restaurant on foot.

•3 RANSVIK – MÖLLE (0:45; 4073 steps; 3.3km; alt. gain 158m; alt. loss 167m): A longer but easier route between Mölle and Ransvik is to follow the path that more or less parallels the “Italian Road” at all points. You must however cross this highly trafficked road multiple times where utmost care should be taken… A different very pleasant route that should not be missed is the shortcut you can make just above Ransvik (instead of following the access road entirely out). I did not time this alternative specifically but in this case you will only parallel the “Italian Road” for the last few hundred meters, and it probably cuts about half a kilometer from this walk in total.

•4 MÖLLE – BRÄCKE MÖLLE (1:10; 6927 steps; 5.5km; alt. gain 167m; alt. loss 141m): Follow the bicycle road (former railroad track) straight (for sure!) out of Mölle. But do all the footpath extensions you can, as this is a fairly short walk. For the footpaths you should probably choose the “cow-less” approach but there are other options that will enable you the follow the coast more closely, if you do not mind sharing your way with some animals. I did not investigate this much and followed the more obvious and well marked trail.

At the end of this walk, were you stroll up the street from Lerhamn to the mill, you are very close to the first class Kullaberg Vineyard that you must absolutely visit! Take the guided tour! Visit the wine bar! This is an order! 😉

•5 MÖLLE – KRAPPERUPS PARK (0:37; 4355 steps; 3.5km; alt. gain 129m; alt. loss 123m): Here I timed the super efficient straight walk directly to the back (lower) entrance of the Krapperup park, just following the bicycle path. No detours. Not the slightly longer route visited in walk 4 above. This is when you just want to visit the park, the (free) museum, or just want to enjoy the pleasant café (whose cakes unlike some other commentators I find taste EVEN BETTER than they look…).

•6 MÖLLE – HÖGANÄS (2:09; 14268 steps; 11.4km; alt. gain 336m; alt. loss 345m): Passing Krapperup and Lerhamn (see the walks above) you can continue in just above 2 hours to an actual small city where, visiting the museum, you can watch a movie in the old cinema recreated from the one that believe it or not used to be down in the coal mine! And was featured in the 1967 TV series! Not a very long walk and I included all the footpath extensions I could. On just bicycle paths it can be done even shorter and faster.

In Höganäs you can also visit yet another location from the 1967 TV Series, this is were you could find both the former Hotel Schweitz (burned down a few years after) and the local newspaper “NST” (eventually torn down to give way to a modern building):

Be careful, maybe some “enemy” Ingress Player will spot you here. 😉

•7 MÖLLE – ARILD – FALKAMÖLLAN (2:55; 16467 steps; 13.2km; alt. gain 441m; alt. loss 409m): This walk could be done as an extension of walk 1 above, but I felt it was better done as a walk on its own. Note that Falkamöllan today does not have a café like in previous times (and in the 1967 TV series), it is converted to a home and is private property. PLEASE NO TRESPASSING!

This walk is not as long as my timing indicates as I insisted on following my nose refusing to look at even Google Maps and my nose took me slightly to the right of the entrance towards Himmeltorp and I ended up curving around on animal traces back to where I started to cross the fields, and this wasted between one and two kilometers. *Sigh*

I found the correct path (easier to find in the reverse) in walk 8 below, see more details there. The idea was NOT to follow the rough paths from walk 1 above, but from upper Mölle take tracks as straight and easy as possible towards Himmelstorp, via Björkeröd. This went very well for a long time, entering a huge picnic area there were gravel roads ahead. Continuing from this I crossed fields from the sign shown in walk 8 below. However, I has unable to see the correct gate and I just continued on like an idiot. The animal traces all went back to the barn… So back at Björkeröd I followed the sign towards “Skogen” and eventually got myself on the right track from walk 1, all the way to Arild. If you are looking for the right gate to find the back (lower) entrance towards Himmelstorp, here is the almost invisible gate (or stile) across the fields that I did not see (photo taken on walk 8, going the opposite way):

The walk of course does not end at Falkamöllan either, there is no transport from there, you can walk further towards Skäret to visit a reportedly pleasant café there, eventually you will have to get yourself back to Arild to pick up the bus home…

•8 MÖLLE (– NIMIS) – HIMMELSTORP – MÖLLE (2:16; 11390 steps; 9.1km; alt. gain 332m; alt. loss 347m): This is probably the shortest route possibe towards Himmelstorp if you walk it backwards. It is for the most part the intended route of walk 7 above, but uses yet another shortcut path starting at the Mölle Chapel. Here you will after a while enter a dirt road going straight to Björkeröd even bypassing the picnic area. At a crossroads I still took left at the walkers sign (as eventually in walk 7) and in a minute another left for “Skogen”. There a yellow marked path connecting to a blue marked rough path passes Nimis, where there is NO SIGN, DANGEROUS TERRAIN and I had no sensible choice but to pass this in its entirety. You are wise to do the same. Not waymarking this trail AT ALL (the only makeshift sign is the one above, kilometers away) is SERIOUSLY IRRESPONSIBLE. This detour towards Himmelstorp is however great fun even if VERY ROUGH at points. Downwards from Himmelstorp you can walk back towards the fields attempted in walk 7 close to a private house with a red fence. Just where the fence starts a narrow path takes off right down into the woods and in a minute you are crossing a stile into the fields where I was a few days before (the “secret” stile shown on the picture under walk 7). Now you can easily cross the fields in the now obvious direction and climb another stile with the signs shown in the picture above. Here you are back on the dirt road towards Björkeröd via yet another stile or two. From there just follow your initial path out to get back to chapel.

• Good starting points: • Basically anywhere on Kullaberg, Mölle is my first choice
• How to get there: • By air to Helsingborg/Ängelholm
• More info: Sorry, none yet
