Kimolos

Κίμωλος – Cyclades

Kimolos a small, quiet and up-market island. Excellent for walking, and walks are generally well marked in my experience. There is even a small bus with several daily runs across the island. Otherwise you can just walk the roads, there is little traffic even in high season. Accomodation is very high standard.

All this sounds like the perfect Greek island, right? Well, actually no. The Chora is covered with trendy bars and cafés, but has few choices when it comes to offer traditional Greek food at reasonable prices. Often very expensive for what is served. The menu can also be very limited. I was getting Monty Python vibes (the cheese shop, remember…) from a fish and seafood taverna (supposedly) that actually did not have ANY fish!

So all in all Kimolos was a bit of a disappointment, and I think the four nights I spent there will be enough for me.

Selected walks: For walks on Kimolos take a look Santorini, Sifnos and the Western & Southern Cyclades in by Dieter Graf (referred to below as “/Graf/”). An excellent Anavasi Topo Islands (1:32000) map exist (see above). But I can also warmly recommend the “Anavasi mapp”, in other words their “map app”, where you can buy an even more updated version of the original map. When I refer to this map (as /Anavasi/), I am using the “mapp”. Note that my watch broke down and I only have timings from the stop watch.

•1 CHORA – ELLINIKÁ (+ return to CHORA just following the roads, this takes at least an additional hour, also do spend some time at the good and quiet beaches here before going back…) (my total time for the main walk 2h24): This is official walk 1 on the island as seen on the /Anavasi/ map. The main (timed) part of the walk is very nice, and has shadow in the morning. But do bring lots of water as the stroll back to town on a (partly) asphalt road can be VERY hot.

•2 CHORA – PANTOKRÁTOR – AG. NIKOLÁOS – CHORA (my total time 2h06): This is walk 36 in /Graf/. Nice short walk. Fairly easy to find the way, but the last part of the walk became mainly a road walk as the coast turned out to be impassable not far after Ag. Nikoláos (without possibly both climbing and wading). Stich together what you can find.

• Good starting points: • Chora

• How to get there: • By several daily car ferries from Milos • By ferry from some other select islands in the Cyclades • By ferry from the mainland
