San Francisco as such is well presented elsewhere on the web, I do not think I have much to contribute there. But I will say that for a US city San Francisco is unusually compact and pretty. I can only recommend it warmly. The below walk is just one I did while attending WWDC down in San José.
Selected walks: For some information about possible hikes around San Francisco see "California & Nevada Travel Survival Kit" by Lonely Planet, referred to below as "/LP/" (now out of print...). A current walking guide is Frommer's 24 Great Walks in San Francisco (picture above). I have not used that one myself so I do not know anything about it.
•1 4TH & TOWNSEND - FISHERMANS WHARF - GOLDEN GATE (+ return) (my total time around 6h): A huge eight hour walk done in six hours. The plan was to do "An Energetic Marin Roundtrip" from /LP/, however past the Golden Gate the continuing bicycle path was "No Pedestrians" so I returned the same way. No idea about the current situation, though. On Sundays the bridge was closed for bicycles, so I guess it would have been fairly safe to continue, but... The idea is that you can take a ferry back from Sausalito.
OBS: I did this walk last in 1999!
• Good starting points: • I started at the CalTrain station• How to get there: • By air and/or train/bus
• More info: Sorry, none yet
